Mental health first, before any training engagements. Mental health should be a precursor to any training for various reasons. First and foremost, mental health is an essential aspect of our overall well-being and neglecting it can significantly impact our ability to learn and retain new information. When our mental health is compromised, we may struggle with concentration, memory, and processing new information, making it challenging to engage with training effectively. Furthermore, mental health plays a critical role in our ability to apply the skills and knowledge we learn through training. Even if we can engage with training effectively, if our mental health is compromised, we may struggle to apply what we have learned in practical settings. Mental health problems can impact our ability to communicate effectively, manage stress, and work collaboratively with others, all of which are critical skills for success in many types of training. When we are struggling with mental health issues such as depression or anxiety, it can be challenging to find the energy and motivation to engage with new information and skills. This can lead to a cycle of disengagement and apathy that can be difficult to break. In addition, mental health problems can impact our motivation to engage in training in the first place. (This may be one of the reasons why organisations struggle to find the ROI on training). Moreover, addressing mental health can provide a strong foundation for effective training. When prioritising our mental health, we develop the coping skills, resilience, and self-awareness needed to engage with training effectively. We are better equipped to manage stress, regulate emotions, and focus on goals. This can help us to engage with training more effectively and retain the information and skills we learn more easily. In conclusion, mental health should be a precursor to any training because it is essential for effective learning and retention, impacts our ability to apply new knowledge and skills in practical settings, can affect our motivation to engage with training in the first place and can provide a strong foundation for effective training. By prioritising our mental health, we can ensure that we can engage with training effectively, retain new information and skills, and apply them in practical settings, ultimately leading to greater success and well-being.
